What is inclusivity?

Inclusivity is quite a broad topic...

What is inclusivity?

Many define inclusivity differently, due to personal experiences. Joyce defines inclusive design as methodologies to create products that understand and enable people of all backgrounds and abilities. It may address accessibility, age, economic situation, geographic location, language, race, and more. (Joyce, 2022).

What types of inclusivity are there?

Kat Holmes defines the different branches of inclusivity as attributes. There are various attributes that design has defined until today (there may be more in the future): Accessibility, Age, Economic Situation, Geographic Location, Language, Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality.

Why aim for inclusivity?

car testing dummies
Car crash tests are done with male dummies. In recent years, Europe has integrated a law to integrate a female dummy. This results in a ´female´ dummy that is a scaled down version of a male dummy and ths female dummy is only mandatory in one of 5 crash tests (Criado Perez, 2019). Additionally, different ethnic and racial groups have distinct body types and have different measurements, yet, only male dummies are taken into account.

Media Representation
In 2017, Nivea published an ad targeted to the Middle East community that goes with the phrase: White is purity. 2 days after it was published, Nivea removed the ad due to the backlash it received on social media. Viewers considered this ad to be racist and alude to white supremecy (Parker  & Wright, 2018).
