We are a group of students from the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at Delft Institute of Technology that are interested in learning and sharing our knowledge on the topic of inclusivity in design.
Globalization has brought diversity to our communities, yet many products continue to exclude and discriminate users. By providing inclusivity resources and workshops, together we can achieve an inclusive perspective.
The consequence of not doing inclusivity is exclusivity. Exclusivity causes users to feel marginalized from experiences, products, groups, etc. It is this marginalization that is caused by designers, either consciously or subconsciously. Designers have unconscious biases that cause the subconscious marginalization. Therefore, these designers are unconsciously discriminating users based on different stereotypes and experiences.
We need to first look into creating awareness for ourselves. What is inclusivity? How does it appear into your practice? What biases appear your practice? With your awareness, make use of workshops, resources and tools that provide an inclusive perspective to carry out your work. Lastly, reflect on how this awareness and resources, have shaped your work.
